Holidays in term time, leave of absence and fine information

Parents/Guardians must ask permission for their child to miss school. If Parents/Guardians don’t they risk a fixed penalty notice. Primary and Secondary schools in Leeds follow a common policy on holiday absence, but it is up to the Headteacher to decide whether or not the absence will be authorised.
Parents/Guardians wishing to apply for their child to take leave from school should complete a holiday form and return it to school for authorisation well in advance of the proposed leave.
The attendance of all our pupils in school is incredibly important to us so that children feel settled and achieve their full learning potential. As we are receiving more and more holiday absence requests it is our intention to issue fixed Penalty Notice fines as of Monday 16th April 2018.
Fixed Penalty Information
For absences of 5 school days or more we will request Leeds City Council issue a Penalty Notice(s) on our behalf which will be £60 per parent per child. Once the penalty notice is issued you will have 21 days in which to pay the fine. If you fail to pay in that time period the fine will double and you then have another seven days in which to pay, taking the total time in which to make payment to 28 days.
I must advise you that if you fail to make payment after 28 days Leeds City Council has the power to prosecute you in the Magistrates Court for the offence of failing to ensure my child attends school regularly. A guilty verdict at court can lead to a fine of up to £1000, and a criminal record which can affect employment opportunities.
This process is in line with current government legislation and Leeds City Council Code of Conduct.
